Digital Landscape: We live in a digital world and a digital society. Data, technology, devices and networks are truly embedded in all facets of our lives – personal, social, educational, financial, medical, organizational, religious, governmental and others. Cyber Threats: Each and every organization, commercial, government or otherwise, big or small, financial or non-financial, personal, social or business is today facing increasing threats of cyber-attacks, malware, etc. and can be targeted for all kinds of data, espionage, etc. The cyber threats are always ever-evolving security risks as threats advance and change more quickly than organizations can cope up with. Cyber Crime, Cyber-attacks and Cyber terrorism is all set to increase globally in the world.

Cyber Security: We need to secure all kinds of touchpoints that we have with the digital systems and also defend them against potential malicious attacks, from intruders, etc. Technology is indispensable in personal, social, organizational and even governmental functioning and development.

Cyber Crime Statistics: The Internet Crime Report for 2019, released by USA’s Internet Crime Complaint Centre (IC3) of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has revealed that India stands third in the world among top 20 countries that are victims of internet crimes. Every IT position is also a cybersecurity position now. Every IT worker, every technology worker, needs to be involved with protecting and defending apps, data, devices, infrastructure, and people.

Talent Gap & Skills Shortage: The global cybersecurity workforce gap is daunting, with real-world implications for organizations in all industries and of all sizes. In an era of high-profile data breaches and devastating cyberattacks, cybersecurity impacts every individual and every organization. The cybersecurity job market is growing exponentially and isn’t expected to slow down any time soon. India Inc., facing a scarcity of cybersecurity professionals. Salaries offered for such roles by 25-35% over the past year. Hacking and cyberattacks are compelling firms to hire talent at a premium. There are currently around 30,000 cybersecurity vacancies in India, recruitment experts say, including several for C-suite leaders who can overhaul the overall security strategy of a firm. Other openings include managers who can oversee cybersecurity projects and engineers with impeccable domain knowledge. By 2025, the cybersecurity space is expected to generate around a million jobs in India.

B Sc – Cyber and Digital Science: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has launched a unique Bachelors programme in Cyber and Digital Science. Students who have passed the Higher secondary school certificate exam (10+2) or its equivalent examination with English or Three Year Diploma course of board of technical education conducted by Government of Maharashtra or its equivalent OR Higher secondary school certificate (10+2) Examination with English and vocational subject of +2 level (MCVC) are eligible for taking admission to this programme.

Why B Sc – Cyber & Digital Science? Even as cybercrimes get more complex, most available candidates have only the basic training and certifications. Companies, meanwhile, need people who can manage advanced technologies, take care of the transformation from legacy to new-age systems, and innovate. This programme attempts to bridge this gap and create domestic talent in this area. The required skills are analytics, engineering, and software development, and also highly specialised functions such as intrusion detection (monitoring suspicious activity on the network), access management, risk auditing, cryptography, forensic sciences, and network security.
What do students of cyber security and Digital Science learn? Cyber security and Digital Science is a combination of a body of technologies, processes, and practices; it is an evolving set of tools, risk management approaches, technologies, training, and best practices. As a part of cyber-security students shall learn cryptographic techniques can be used to defend data in transit between systems, reducing the probability that critical data exchanged between systems can be intercepted or modified and also guard against loss or theft. Students will therefore also get exposed to cyber law and related aspects.
Students will study subjects such as Computer Science and Problem Solving, Computing Devices, Mathematics, Statistical Techniques in Computer Science, C Programming, Digital Electronics, Computer Networks, Ethical Hacking, Web Designing, Python Programming, Data Base Management Systems, Data Structures, Environment Science, Soft Skills.
What do Cyber Security Professionals do? Cyber Security professionals help governments, businesses and individuals guard against cyber threats. They add value to their organization by carrying out security operations, security administration, Risk assessment, analysis and management, Governance, risk management and compliance (GRC), Cloud computing security, Security and threat intelligence analysis, Security engineering and administration, Penetration testing, Intrusion detection & Network monitoring, operational technology security, secure software development, forensics. They work with Governments and Industry Bodies to evolve Standard protocols and guidance to effectively implement cyber-security practices.

Career Options: This programme shall generate multiple options for employment, entrepreneurship and openings in public institutions too. Typical cybersecurity job titles include – Security analyst, Security engineer, Security architect, Security administrator, Chief Information Security Officer, Chief Security Officer, Security Consultant , IT Director , IT Security Director , IT Manager , IT Security Manager, Security/Compliance Officer , Application Developer / Tester, etc.
